My father met a pregnant woman crying
Can you believe what he did?
One afternoon, I was walking along the harbor, he said, I don’t remember why or what I was doing there, but I was young and curious.
The bus station was not too far away. Everyone was rushing to their boat. The noise was disturbing with heavy activities. The air was polluted with smoke from the buses and the boats.
Two men behind me, they carried bucket on their head and water bottles in their hands. They were shouting “25 cents a bottle, 25cents”. It seemed like they were chasing me. I walked faster, away from them. I felt water on my back, then on my head, so I turned around thinking they were mad. That’s when I realized everyone was running around looking for shelter, It was hot but I was not prepared for that: it was raining.
I looked around and ran into a street vendor’s tent. I tried to wipe out the rain drops from my face, as I looked up, I saw this pregnant woman, sheltered into the vendor’s tent. Her belly was rounded and stretched out. She was crying and bowed her head to hide her pain.
I felt sorry and I approached her to find out how I could help. She said she was fine, but I insisted. “I’m not a nurse, but I can call an ambulance, a taxi or even take you myself to the hospital”. I said.
She told me that I was very nice, not to worry, she was not having the baby yet, she is due for another month.
Did you hear that? “ She is due for another month.” These are the words that I needed to hear to leave that woman alone. I don’t know what I was trying to prove to myself, I asked her why she was crying then. She answered that I could not help her regardless.
I felt compelled to find out more and I said to her ”There is nothing that I couldn’t do for a pregnant woman.” I will never forget that day when she looked at me and burst into tears. I got scared but I got closer and took her in my arms without thinking.
She seemed relieved and she said “ my parents live in the island, where I’m from. I came here to the city to find a job. I was living at my mom’s cousin’s house, but when I got pregnant she kicked me out. I don’t have a place to stay. I’ve been sleeping at friends’ houses. Now I’m about to have my baby, I don’t want to live like that. I want to go home, but my parents expected better than me. I don’t know how I will go to them without a father to my baby ”.
She was crying in my arms, I didn’t know what to do. I took a deep breath and asked her if she wanted me to go with her as the baby’s father. She was heavily pregnant but light enough to jump on her feet and hug me.
After I spent all my money buying baby products that could last for a year, here I was on the next boat ready to be a father.
